BCBA 6th Edition Changes: What You Need to Know
The BACB's 6th Edition Test Content Outline introduced 13 new task areas. Here's exactly what changed and how it affects your study plan.
What Changed in the 6th Edition?
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) released the 6th Edition Test Content Outline (TCO) in 2024, and exams based on it began in 2025. If you're studying for the BCBA exam now, this is the version you need to know.
The biggest takeaway: the exam now includes 13 new task areas that weren't in the 5th Edition.
The 13 New Task Areas
Here's what was added and where it sits in the TCO:
Section B: Concepts & Principles (14% of exam)
- B.18 Multiple exemplar training
- B.19 Generalization and discrimination
- B.20 Multiple control in verbal behavior
These additions reflect a deeper emphasis on verbal behavior and the conditions under which generalization occurs.
Section D: Experimental Design (6% of exam)
- D.3 Threats to internal validity
- D.4 Threats to external validity
Previously, the exam tested research design concepts broadly. Now, you need to identify specific threats — history, maturation, regression to the mean, and others.
Section F: Behavior Assessment (14% of exam)
- F.2 Cultural variables in assessment
- F.9 Functional analysis variations
The 6th Edition explicitly calls out cultural responsiveness in assessment and expands on variations of functional analysis (brief FA, trial-based FA, etc.).
Section G: Behavior-Change Procedures (14% of exam)
- G.18 Emotional and elicited effects of reinforcement and punishment
- G.19 Motivating operations in practice
This is significant — the exam now tests your understanding of the emotional side effects of punishment and reinforcement, not just their behavioral effects.
Section H: Selecting & Implementing Interventions (10% of exam)
- H.5 Relapse prevention and mitigation
- H.6 Maintenance and generalization planning
These additions emphasize the importance of planning for what happens after the initial behavior change.
Section I: Personnel Supervision & Management (14% of exam)
- I.6 Organizational behavior management
- I.7 Performance monitoring and feedback
The supervision section now explicitly tests OBM concepts and structured performance feedback systems.
What Stayed the Same?
The overall structure of 9 content areas remains the same. The percentage weights are similar to the 5th Edition, with minor adjustments. The exam is still 185 questions (160 scored + 25 unscored pilot questions) with a 4-hour time limit.
How Should You Adjust Your Study Plan?
If you've been using 5th Edition study materials, you need to supplement with content covering the new task areas. Here's what to prioritize:
- Threats to validity (D.3, D.4): Many candidates find these questions challenging because they require understanding research methodology concepts that aren't always covered deeply in coursework.
- Cultural variables (F.2): This is a growing emphasis across the BACB. Expect questions about cultural humility, adapting assessments for diverse populations, and recognizing cultural influences on behavior.
- Emotional effects (G.18): Know the respondent conditioning effects that occur alongside operant procedures. Punishment doesn't just decrease behavior — it can elicit anxiety, aggression, and escape behavior.
- Relapse prevention (H.5): Understand resurgence, renewal, and reinstatement — the conditions under which previously reduced behaviors can return.
